It’s kick-off for the world’s first-ever net-zero football match at an elite level, on 19 September. Partnering with Sky, Tottenham Hotspur is setting the sports sector an example with its #GameZero.

The match will keep its emissions to a minimum and offset any CO2 produced with natural means of removing carbon from the atmosphere.

"We hope that by using the power of sport, we can inspire and support football fans to make simple changes to reduce their carbon footprint and make more climate-friendly choices," announced Sky Sports' managing director Jonathan Licht on Sky Sports.

Echoing his sentiments, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy said: "As the Premier League's greenest club, Tottenham Hotspur is passionate about our planet - we look forward to showcasing our wide range of sustainable measures that are already in place and encouraging our fans to take simple actions that can make a huge difference."

‘We can all take steps to help’

Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) to be held in Glasgow this November 2021, environmentalists are gearing up for world leaders to unite for what should be one of the most pivotal moments in the history of this planet.

The sports industry hasn’t built up a strong reputation for being eco-friendly. North America’s major leagues for football, baseball, hockey and netball are estimated to produce 32,000 tons of CO2 each year, and major international sporting events like the Olympic Games are usually fueled by billions of pounds of coal.
