Apple to support flood relief efforts

Words by Smiley Team

After severe flooding hit Western Europe last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the tech company will donate to support relief efforts.

In a tweet on Friday, he said: “Our hearts are with all those affected by the devastating flooding across Germany, Belgium and Western Europe. Apple will be donating to support relief efforts.”

The donation will build on Apple’s contributions to supporting disadvantaged, vulnerable or disaster-struck communities. In the past they have donated to help tackle the pandemic as well as to initiatives driving social equality.

At least 170 people have been killed and many remain missing after record rainfall hit Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Others have been made homeless and tens of thousands are without electricity or clean water as a result of this one impact of the climate crisis.

How you can help

Among the organisations supporting victims, the Red Cross is participating in relief efforts. Thousands of volunteers have signed up since the flooding to help those affected.

The charity is calling for people to stop donating specific items for the flood victims. It is too early for them to process the goods they need, and at present they ask for volunteers or financial contributions.

Jan Poté of the Red Cross said: "We really appreciate the wave of solidarity, but we want to ask people to either register as a crisis volunteer or to give financial help at present. Please don't donate any goods yet until we launch a specific call."
