Developer launches UK’s most biodiverse neighbourhood

Words by Smiley Team

Tackling housing shortages and environmental decline in the UK, sustainable housing developer the Berkeley Group is launching a new biodiverse and affordable neighbourhood in West London.

Named The Green Quarter, the development has transformed an 88-acre brownfield site in Ealing into a wildlife haven. Almost half of the site is dedicated to nature and their plans to improve biodiversity levels will make the former industrial site one of the most biodiverse neighbourhoods in the UK.

Creating more green space than St James’s Park and Green Park combined, the developers will dedicate thirteen acres of the site to parkland, including an eight-acre wetland designed in collaboration with biodiversity experts at the London Wildlife Trust

Development director at the London Wildlife Trust David Mooney said: "The Green Quarter is about to reawaken a lost landscape. We are going to create one of the UK's finest examples of urban regeneration that puts biodiversity and nature at its heart."

Serving local people as well as nature, the site features a town square with commercial amenities besides more than 300 homes at affordable prices. Existing Ealing residents got the first pick from the mixture of affordable rentals and shared ownerships.

The local community will enjoy public access the nearby Minet Country Park via a series of footbridges created by Berkeley. They have also reinstated 1.2km of towpath along the Grand Union Canal, offering pedestrians and cyclists a newly beautified route.

The pressing need for sustainable housing

Faced with a climate emergency, an economic downturn and the inevitable social collapse to follow, the need for affordable accommodation has never been greater. People must have a home if they are to endure these difficult times and we urgently need to build housing in a sustainable way. The Green Quarter is just one example of developments that fulfil these requirements.

Ashley Kensington, Managing Director at Berkeley West Thames, said: "The Green Quarter is a scheme that is remarkable by nature, a place that encourages healthy living while providing easy access to central London and beyond.  It is one of the most ambitious regeneration schemes Berkeley has undertaken, transforming a redundant industrial site into potentially the most biodiverse development in the UK.

"The sales launch is a significant milestone and we're excited to showcase a product which we're extremely proud of. With two new parks, wetlands and new access to the neighbouring 90-acre Minet Country Park, The Green Quarter is perfect for those wanting local green space - at a time when this has never been more important to buyers."
