A historic step for UK renewables

Words by Abi Scaife

The Eden Project has just made a huge stride for renewables in the UK, bringing geothermal energy to the country for the first time in 37 years.

Keep going!

Based in Cornwall, the Eden Project is an educational charity and global movement, focused on harmonising the relationship between humans and nature. This week, they have made history by setting up a geothermal energy system.

What is geothermal energy?

Geothermal energy is basically heat that originates from the Earth’s core - meaning we aren’t having to burn or destroy anything to create it. Like solar, wind, water and others, it is a renewable energy source - one that will go on indefinitely, unlike those powered by fossil fuels.

Why is this important?

This is the UK’s first operating deep geothermal heating plant since 1986 - it will be used to supply heat to the Eden Project and its state-of-the-art plant nurseries. In this weather, you might wonder why anyone would want more heat - but the Eden Project cares for many plants that benefit from a warmer climate.

Hopefully, the success of this project will demonstrate to other organisations that geothermal heat is a positive and viable option for heat and energy.
