Amazing News: Water Voles Return to West of England After 20 Years

09:16, 09 December 2024

Words by Abi Scaife, Staff Writer, London

Water voles are returning to the west of England for the first time in 20 years.

Water voles are small rodents with brown fur, little ears and a furry tail - their population has declined by 97% since the 1970s, but now, thanks to an amazing project, they are beginning to return.

Already, there is evidence that the water voles are beginning to breed - meaning that their population will, hopefully, soon be improving in leaps and bounds.

The reintroduction of water voles is part of a wider project that is restoring and protecting their habitat and bodes well for the future of the western UK landscape.
