Gifts don't just have to be in present-form. Here are some ways to give back during Autumn and Winter. Volunteering during the autumn and winter months can be a rewarding way to give back to the community while also enjoying the seasonal changes.
Here are 4 ways people can volunteer during this time:
Food banks are often at the centre of many less fortunate communities during the festive season. With increased demand for food, many food banks and community food programmes experience increased demand during the colder months. Whether you can donate coupla cans or spare some time to help serve food, this opportunity can get you meeting some new faces in your local area.
Following on from the previous point, when the weather gets cold, times are harder for unhoused people. Shelters often need extra hands during winter and the need for extra warm clothing drives up the demand for warm clothing, blankets, and other essentials for those in need.
Not everyone has people to spend the holidays with, so you can spend your time with the elderly at retirement homes, or inviting a single-occupant friend to join in with your family’s festivities. Providing companionship can brighten up someone’s day (even if it’s dark by 4 o’clock).
While crisp autumn leaves look so pretty when they are fresh, the minute they get trodden on, or seepted in rain, they don’t look as aesthetically pleasing. Doing a little sweep of your home road or participating in larger local clean up events, such as in parks or by the coast, can make all the difference in making the place more accommodating (and safer).
