Gifting a creative outlet for young people

Words by Smiley Team

In order to effectively break the cycle of generational poverty, the next generation must be educated in "in-demand" occupations – that's the philosophy of Lights, Camera, Discover, a nonprofit wants to develop confidence and build self-esteem in young people.

Their aim is to provide students with the resources to recognize entrepreneurship opportunities in digital skills, such graphic design, web design, filmmaking, and game design. And ultimately, excel in their future careers.

"Through performance and digital arts, we cultivate in our students a sense of self-worth, strength, and a respect for community service," says founder and executive director, Kema Charles.

"It is hoped that Lights, Camera, Discover will be a catalyst for infusing a cooperative spirit that will bring forth one's own creativity.”

The organization is primarily aimed at middle and high school students. This age group is particularly difficult, they say, but it's also an excellent time for mentoring to be effective.

It offers an ongoing program to train local youth in digital storytelling and animation productions as part of their efforts to give youth a voice through the media arts. It's an award-winning year-round program, in which students learn the fundamentals of filmmaking and animation while also learning about anti-bullying and social awareness.

Students also have the opportunity to create their own projects. One of the program participants said of the program: “Honestly, I knew I’d be good at this [acting]. I’m just happy to finally have a place that let’s me grow in this field.”

Another participant said: “I can’t believe how good I got at being a photographer.”

Turning imagination into opportunity, the organization allows students to come out on top – being proud, confident and strong.
