Mayor of London calls for rent freeze

Words by Abi Scaife

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, is calling for a rent freeze.

Tell me more.

The Mayor announced recently that he has surpassed his initial goal of building 116,000 genuinely affordable houses in London, since 2015.

Unfortunately, with the state of the economy and current interest rates in the UK, rent remains a struggle for many - something that Sadiq Khan is hoping to change.

What did he say?

The Mayor is calling on the government to introduce a rent freeze in London, to give renters a much-needed break, and to help pad their finances.

“We’re choosing to take the side of renters by demanding the government introduce a rent freeze,” said Khan. “We’re choosing to reject the notion that housing is an asset, rather than a basic necessity.”
