How Olio is helping spread festive cheer to neighbours

Words by Smiley Team

Olio, the sharing app designed to fight waste, help your neighbours and save our planet, has launched a Secret Santa campaign in time for Christmas.

Millions of neighbours all over the world are using Olio to share more, care more and waste less.

Between 33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten, and the value of this wasted food is worth over $1 trillion. Meanwhile 800 million people go to bed hungry every night.

Olio is trying to change this, and through their app you can give and get free stuff, borrow and lend household items, and shop for homemade goods - all directly from your community.

The app believes small actions can lead to big change. Collectively, one rescued cupcake, carrot or bottle of lotion at a time can build a more sustainable future where our most precious resources are shared, instead of thrown away.

The Secret Santa campaign

To take part in its Christmas campaign and spread some festive cheer, choose a gift – and then take two photos of your gift - one wrapped, and the other unwrapped. Add who it’s suitable for in the listing description - e.g a creative child, aged 6 to 10.

Then, add the santa emoji to your listing, and you’ll nab Olio’s limited edition Secret Santa badge and earn 100 karma points, up until Christmas Eve.

If you can, wrap your gift up in an eco-friendly way. Then add it to Olio, and you could make a neighbour’s Christmas.

Make sure to not share something which is broken, dirty or unusable. At the same time, don’t buy something brand new for your secret santa gift - the idea is to give something which is pre-loved.

And remember to give yourself a pat on the back, for spreading some festive kindness.
