Best known for starring in the reality TV show, The Only Way is Essex, Georgia Kousoulou is increasingly proving to be a big-hearted philanthropist through her continued support for the charity Dementia UK.
Most recently, she featured in a campaign video to highlight what life is like for those looking after people living with dementia. Alongside a group of carers, she reflected on what she most missed from before lockdown, including having a full English breakfast with her grandma on Saturdays.
The charity’s work touches Kousoulou personally because of her grandma, who she cares about greatly and who is living with a form of dementia.
“I’m really proud to be an official supporter of Dementia UK,” she said. “My lovely YiaYia (grandmother) is living with dementia and I know how hard it can be for families caring for a loved one with this heart-breaking condition, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.”
Kousoulou added: “I’m really looking forward to developing my role with the charity and being able to promote the work of its specialist Admiral Nurses.”
Celebrity support from Kousoulou is particularly welcomed by the charity during the pandemic when funding is harder to come by and staff are unable to meet with carers or their family members in person.
Chief executive and chief admiral nurse at Dementia UK Hilda Hayo explained: “Everyone affected by dementia is going through their own challenges in a climate of reduced services, with the deterioration of the person living with dementia and decreased physical and mental health of family members being some of the more frequent issues we are seeing.
“Families need to have advocates in the form of Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, but there also needs to be an awareness of these dementia specialists. Having Georgia’s influence and passion will be so beneficial as we continue to increase Admiral Nurse services at this time.”
Dementia UK is a charity providing specialist support for families of those living with one of the many memory-impacting diseases referred to as dementia. Their team of admiral nurses offer practical support to unpaid carers, helping them to look after their loved ones in what can be an upsetting time.
