Berkeley Group sets the bar for green housing

Words by Smiley Team

As the only housing developer to make the international A-list of the Carbon Disclosure Project this year, Berkeley Group is setting an exceptional example for others in its industry. The company was among only three per cent of those assessed who made the A-list for its efforts to tackle the climate crisis.

Leading the company’s drive to build environmentally-friendly housing, Berkeley Group’s chief executive, Rob Perrins, said: "We are committed to tackling climate change and creating the low carbon homes of tomorrow. Our approach is holistic, ambitious and hugely challenging. It involves transformational changes to our business operations and to the ways we design and create new places in partnership with our supply chain.

"We want to play a full role in this vital global movement and believe it is the right thing to do for all of our stakeholders. Taking meaningful action on climate change will ultimately make Berkeley a more successful and sustainable business."

This new success for the company builds on a litany of achievements it has had over the last few years. Since 2017 the UK company has operated on 100 per cent renewable energies. At the end of January, it launched what will become one of the most biodiverse neighbourhoods in the UK. For its efforts, it has been named the most sustainable member of its industry for four years running by the Housebuilder Awards.

The Carbon Disclosure Project

The CDP’s A-List showcases the companies forefronting the mission to tackle climate change. Successful members are selected based on their annual environmental impact across three themes: water, forests and the climate.

Paul Simpson, CDP Chief Executive, said: "We extend our congratulations to all the companies on this year's A-List. Taking the lead on environmental transparency and action is one of the most important steps businesses can make and is even more impressive in this challenging year marked by COVID-19. Our A-List celebrates those companies who are preparing themselves to excel in the economy of the future by taking action today."

Thousands of companies disclose through CDP at the request of investors and corporate buyers. You too can convince your company to join this vital programme.

Addressing the companies already participating, the global director of corporations and supply chains at CDP, Dexter Galvin, said: ‘We have the wind in our sails. Now, we need these pioneers to inspire the sluggish majority of corporates if the private sector is to take a leadership role when climate targets ratchet up at COP26 next year. The race is on.”
