Tell Me More

The Great British Food Festival is a key part of the UK Government’s national programme to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day, led by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It aims to unite the nation through food and reflection on the shared history and sacrifices of the past.

The national campaign is  supported by the Together CoalitionThe Big Lunch, and renowned chefs Monica Galetti and Raymond Blanc.

With just over a month until the 80th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May, the focus of the celebrations will take place on Monday 5 May. Communities are encouraged to take part by hosting street parties, picnics, BBQs, or joining local events, creating a nationwide celebration of history and unity.

BBC Masterchef judge Monica Galetti added: "I’m proud to be launching the Great British Food Festival with the /Together Coalition. Food is a fantastic way to unite people and I hope people feel inspired to cook and share their recipes."

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also expressed her support for the campaign, calling it an opportunity to mark VE Day with street parties, barbecues, and Big Lunches. She said: "However, it's not just a celebration, it is also a chance to give thanks to our surviving veterans and hear the stories of our grandparents and great-grandparents so that the next generation can continue their legacy."

Backing the campaign, actor Michael Sheen said: "The 80th anniversary of VE Day provides one of our last opportunities to honour our living Second World War veterans who so bravely fought for our democracy and way of life. I hope communities across the UK will get involved with the Great British Food Festival and join in celebrating together."
