In the ninth year of celebrating Global Recycling Day, the Global Recycling Foundation is shifting the narrative. What was once an "untold story" is now a global movement reaching over 2 billion consumers across 75 countries.
To help you join the mission, we spoke to Ranjit S. Baxi, Founding President and Founder of Global Recycling Day about the core pillars we are championing this year to turn "waste" into a world of opportunity.
Our theme is simple: Don’t think Waste – Think Opportunity. We want to raise awareness that what we throw away is actually a valuable resource. By changing how we view our bins, we can unlock massive benefits, from conserving energy and water to generating employment for millions.
We are currently throwing away over US$50 billion every year by failing to recycle electronic waste. This isn't just about old phones; it’s about Critical Minerals Security. Recycling E-waste allows us to recover precious resources such as gold, platinum, cobalt, lithium, copper as well as other rare earth metals.
Textile waste is a rapidly growing issue that we can no longer ignore. Global Recycling Day is dedicated to promoting better practices in how we buy, wear, and dispose of clothing to reduce the mountains of waste piling up across the globe.
Recycling isn't just about tidying up; it's a primary tool in reducing carbon emissions. By keeping materials in the loop, we drastically lower the environmental footprint of manufacturing and help protect our natural ecosystems.
The most important message is that your individual actions count. When combined across every continent, our small daily choices create a huge global impact. Finding the right recycling solutions for you by choosing the right tools makes it easier to turn 'waste' into a valuable resource.
