Today is the UN International Day of the Girl Child. Set up by the UN to raise awareness for the lack of gender equality across the globe, the 2024 International Day of the Girl theme is ‘Girls’ vision for the future’.
Throughout the world, women and girls are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, lack of education, poverty, and more. There are still many places in the world where women and girls do not have the same amount of rights that men and boys do - but that doesn’t mean we should stop fighting for change.
According to the UN website: “Recent analysis shows that girls are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but hopeful for the future. Every day, they are taking action to realize a vision of a world in which all girls are protected, respected and empowered.”
Now is the time for action - because the only way we can change their fate is through allyship and support.
That’s why we have days like the International Day of the Girl Child, focusing attention on the need to promote girls’ empowerment, and the protection of their human rights.
